Diving Adventures in the Far North Great Barrier Reef

Liveaboard Cruises on S.Y. Serica

T
The best combination for adventure diving, nature discovery, and the charm of relaxing can be found on the S.Y. Serica, one of the most beautiful and comfortable yachts operating in the north of the Great Barrier Reef. Discover the marvels of the far north of Queensland, Australia with this exclusive luxury diving cruise, far from the usual crowded Great Barrier Reef dive sites.

The far north of the Great Barrier Reef is home to absolutely pristine dive sites which are very rarely dived. The very experienced crew of the S.Y. Serica will guide you through the numerous wonders of the place. The remote dive sites are situated off the Cape York peninsula, two hours of stunning low flight from Cairns. Here you will dive steep walls, pinnacles, and incredible drift dives in the reef passes and shallower coral reefs. Most of the dive sites are packed with big pelagic action such as sharks, manta rays, tunas, and jacks. These pristine and untouched dive sites are also home to some very bizarre and rare critters, making these cruises an underwater photographer "must dive" place on their agenda.

The best time of the year to cruise and dive this underwater wonder is between September and December (spring and summer in the southern hemisphere). At this time, divers can meet mating turtles, who also lay eggs on shore. This is the time for the famous barrier reef coral spawning at night and the schooling of hammer-head sharks.

S.Y. Serica

To accommodate divers on this diving and cruising haven is the 22m (75 ft) motorized ketch, the S.Y. Serica and her highly trained and experienced crew. She caters easily to 6 guests in a unique combination of luxury and Australian laidback hospitality. Divers will be hosted in fully air conditioned cabins with king size bed or single twin bunks. The vessel has 2 double bed cabins and one twin sharing cabin, 2 WC, and 2 showers. The air conditioned lounge provides TV / VCR, satellite telephone, fax, and internet access. Guests are granted daily cabin service, with fresh towels, laundry service, a hair dryer in the cabins, and lots of power outlets with 110V / 220V.

Diving services will include unlimited dives, a dive guide, aluminum tanks, weights, an E6 processor for underwater photographers, and a submersible dive platform. During the trip, divers can admire the splendors of the coastline in northern Queensland, visit native aborigine cave paintings and small artisan communities, giving the journey a cultural dimension. The crew will help you to discover the abundant life of these remote places. You will be able to observe, in their natural habitats, numerous rare birds, occasional dugongs, and perhaps even the top predator of the area: the salt water crocodile.

Trip schedule: Divers arrive in Cairns and stay overnight there. Crew will meet divers at their hotel for transportation to the airport. There you will take a spectacular two hour flight above the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns to Lockhart River, then a 90 minute trip by 4 wheel drive through northern Queensland bush to get to the port of embarkation in Portland Roads. Three hours of sailing will bring the divers to their first dive site. The last day will be spent snorkeling and seeing the sights of the coastline (no diving as divers will have to fly back to Cairns the same day). After reaching the final port, guests will be brought back to Cairns.
